About NACHAMS

The Nigerian Association of Church History and Missiological Studies brings together scholars, Church leaders and students committed to the study of Church History and Missiology in Nigeria.

Our Story

A national home for Church historians and Missiologists

The Nigerian Association of Church History and Missiological Studies (NACHAMS) was founded in 2019 and inaugurated on 6 March 2019 at the University of Ibadan. Its members are committed to supporting scholarly study and research in Church History and Missiology in Nigeria, and to promoting every area of these disciplines.

The Association supports researchers who are interested in Church History and Missiological Studies, irrespective of their status, gender, ethnic affiliation, religious or political belief, and collaborates in research and learning with similar associations in other parts of the world. It is dedicated to helping bring the Church closer to the people and the people closer to the Church.

Our Mission

To promote scholarly research, publication and dialogue in Church History and Missiology in Nigeria, in service of the Church, the academy and the nation.

Our Vision

A community of Nigerian Church historians and Missiologists whose research shapes the life and mission of the Church and enriches global scholarship.

Our Aim

To create a platform where Church historians and Missiologists in Nigeria can interact with one another, carry out research and share their work.

What the Association works to achieve

NACHAMS pursues nine objectives that guide its research, publications and conferences, and its engagement with the Church, government and wider society in Nigeria.

Become a Member

Research Focus

To encourage scholars and students of Church History and Missiological Studies in Nigeria to be more research focused, for the overall interest of Christianity in Nigeria and the world.

Human Development

To contribute to the development of the human person in Nigeria and the global community through the tools of Church History and Missiological Studies.

Peace and Justice

To organise conferences that help remove obstacles to peace and justice, and promote security, development and peaceful co-existence among the adherents of the three major religions in Nigeria.

Sharing Knowledge

To share news and information about Church History and Missiological Studies with all Nigerians and beyond, irrespective of religious or political affiliation.

Dialogue and Engagement

To engage regularly with Church leaders on ecumenism and interreligious dialogue, and with government on peace, education, health and security.

Supporting the Church

To support the mission of the Church in Nigeria in collaboration with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

Religious Tolerance

To educate Christians and non-Christians, through research, on the need to be receptive to the views of others without violence, and to promote peaceful co-operation among people of all religions in Nigeria.

National Development

To provide a platform for engagement in Christian activities for the growth and development of the Nigerian nation.

Collaboration

To collaborate with all Christians in Nigeria in sharing information with other religions while promoting the cause of Church History and Missiological Studies.

Emblem, Motto and Governance

The emblem of the Association is the Cross set within the map of Nigeria, a sign of its commitment to the Christian faith and to the nation. Its motto, “History for Mission”, expresses the conviction that the careful study of the Church’s past serves its mission in the present.

The organs of the Association are the General Assembly, the Board of Executive Council, the Secretariat, the Disciplinary Committee and the Editorial Board. The General Assembly is the supreme organ of the Association. It meets at the Annual General Meeting, normally held in November, and elects the officers of the Association by secret ballot. The National Executive Committee gives effect to its resolutions and carries out the day to day business of the Association.

Key Dates
